2006 DEER MANAGEMENT SHORT COURSE    

 

MILFORD – The Pike County Branch of Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) based in Milford will sponsor a Short Course on April 22 with speakers focusing on current issues in deer hunting in PA and across our region.  A presentation on translating recent deer research findings into better deer hunting techniques.  Also a talk on “Deer Research in Pennsylvania: Its Recent History and a Look to the Future”. With a presentation on Chronic Wasting Disease in Deer Populations and review the status of work completed in PA.  The last of four featured speakers will discuss their work coordinating the Kinzua Quality Deer Cooperative, a partnership between hunters and landowners of 75,000 acres in NW Pennsylvania measuring the deer herd and the habitat as they strive to establish a balance of healthy deer and forests.

 

 Speakers are Dr. Dave Samuel, Editor of Bowhunter Magazine, Columnist for Whitetail Journal, Former Pope & Young Board Member and author of the book “Know Hunting”.

  Duane Diefenbach, PhD,  Prof. of Wildlife Ecology, Penn State  and Asst. Unit Leader of the Pennsylvania Coop. Fish and Wildlife Research Unit.

Walt Cottrell DVM, Filling a new position of Wildlife Veterinarian with the PA Game Commission and is heading up monitoring and response planning for Chronic Wasting Disease.

Dave Decalesta PhD,  Certified Wildlife Biologist/Consultant and former Research Wildlife Biologist US Forest Service NE Research Station.

This event will be held Saturday, April 22, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Dingman Township firehouse located at 680 Log Tavern Rd., Milford, near the intersection of Log Tavern Rd. and Route 739.

Admission to the Short Course is $15 per person and includes a bag lunch. Seats are limited to the first 200 responses and pre-registration is advised to help us plan lunches for all that attend.

A sportsmen silent auction, raffles, and cash prizes will take place throughout the event.

Dr. Dave Samuel Among Speakers at QDMA Event

 

MILFORD – Dr. David E. Samuel, Editor of Bowhunter Magazine, Columnist for Whitetail Journal, former Pope & Young board member and author of the book “Know Hunting” is one of four speakers at an upcoming Pike County Branch of Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) Short Course on April 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Dingman Township firehouse located at 680 Log Tavern Rd., Milford, near the intersection of Log Tavern Rd. and Route 739.

Samuel will give two presentations. In the morning, he will review deer hunting and deer management compared to other regions of the country. During the afternoon, he will translate recent deer research findings into better deer hunting tactics.

Duane Diefenbach, PhD, Prof. of Wildlife Ecology Penn State and Asst. Unit Leader of the Pennsylvania Coop. Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, will review deer research in the state with its recent history and a look into the future.

Dave DeCalesta, PhD, Certified Wildlife Biologist-Consultant and former Research Wildlife Biologist with the US Forest Service NE Research Station, will give an overview of the work coordinating the Kinzua Quality Deer Cooperative and review findings on the 75,000-acre project in northwest Pa.

Branch presentations will be given by Peter Pinchot, Branch president, about current QDMA programs and activities, and Robin Wildermuth, Branch vice president, on Pike County data on deer densities and deer size.
